If the app is behaving oddly, open Settings, tap Capture debug, and send a screenshot of that screen along with your note. It tells me almost everything I need to know.
What the app is
It answers one question: how's the canyon right now? It covers US-191 between Bozeman and West Yellowstone, and MT-64 up to Big Sky, and nothing else.
About 22 miles of that drive has no cell service, so no navigation app can tell you what's happening inside it. This one measures the drive using the phones of the drivers already in there. Your phone times the trip, holds it while there's no signal, and sends it when signal comes back.
Do I have to share my drives?
No. The app works perfectly well if you never turn that on. You'll see current conditions, official road reports, weather alerts, Highway Patrol incidents, and what other drivers have flagged, all without contributing anything.
Sharing does make it better for everyone, though. The drive times you see are only as fresh as the last person who drove it.
How do I stop sharing my drives?
Two ways, both permanent until you change them back:
- Open the iPhone Settings app, find Canyon, tap Location, and choose Never. The app keeps working, it just stops timing anything.
- Or delete the app. Nothing is left behind on your phone, and there is no account anywhere to close.
Trips that were already sent are anonymous and can't be traced back to you, so there's nothing of yours to delete on my end. That's covered properly on the privacy page.
Why does it want location access all the time?
Because the whole point is timing a drive through a stretch with no signal, with your phone in your pocket and the screen off. If the app could only watch while you had it open, it would measure nothing useful.
It only ever records on the roads it tracks. Anything more than about 100 meters off those roads is thrown away, and it never records where a trip started or ended.
Will it eat my battery?
It shouldn't. The app sleeps most of the time and only wakes the GPS up properly once it looks like you're actually driving the corridor. Away from those roads it uses almost nothing.
There's a Max capture switch in Settings that runs GPS flat out. It's there for debugging and it is battery-hungry. Leave it off unless I've asked you to turn it on.
Why does it say there's no recent drive data?
Because nobody has driven that stretch recently, and the app would rather tell you that than invent a number. Early mornings and quiet stretches south of Big Sky are the usual culprits. Official road and weather information still shows.
The drive time looks wrong
Times come from real drivers, so a driver who stopped for coffee, or for a bighorn sheep standing in the road, can pull a number up. The app filters the obvious cases and compares against what's typical for that stretch, but it isn't perfect. If something looks badly off, tell me, and include roughly when you saw it.
What about the tip jar?
Entirely optional, and it unlocks nothing. Every feature is free and always will be. Apple handles the payment, so I never see your card or your name. It exists because servers cost money and this app has no ads and sells no data.
