US-191 through the Gallatin Canyon is a two-lane road with two-foot shoulders, a river on one side, rock on the other, and most of Big Sky’s workforce on it twice a day. This page is the record behind the app. Every number links to where it came from.

The trouble concentrates: the Lava Lake S-curves alone saw 52 crashes in 2009–2018, and one stretch recorded 39 crashes per mile over five years. Seven of those crashes were fatal and 27 caused serious injuries.
A note on the two death tolls above, because they measure different road: the 34 white crosses stand between Four Corners and the canyon mouth, on the approach before the canyon even starts, placed by one American Legion coordinator over his 16 years. The sheriff’s one-a-year average covers the canyon itself. Corridor-wide the toll runs higher: 2024 alone had five fatal crashes between Four Corners and West Yellowstone.
Measured against other Montana roads
An MDT study put the Gallatin Gateway–Big Sky crash rate 34% higher for cars and 84% higher for trucks than comparable Montana highways. 24% of its crashes involve wildlife, more than twice the statewide rate. By the state’s own data, it’s one of the most dangerous roads in Montana.
Who’s on it
MDT’s counter near Big Sky logs about 4,100 vehicles a day in each direction, with the commute starting at 6 a.m. Roughly 75% of Big Sky’s workforce lives outside the community. The sheriff’s office calls the road safer than it used to be; it’s the rising volume that keeps the crash count up.
The dead zone
From the Gallatin River crossing south of Gallatin Gateway to Big Sky there are 22 miles with zero cell coverage. Not even a text message gets through. Full coverage would take seven or eight new tower sites nobody is building.
The working mitigation is solar-powered emergency call boxes installed by the Rotary Club of Big Sky, used at least a dozen times in a year. That’s what “calling for help” looks like in the canyon in 2026: a phone bolted to a post, if you can reach one.
Whatever happens inside those 22 miles is invisible until someone comes out the other end. Every car that emerges knows something: how fast the canyon is moving, where it stopped, that it made it through at all. Until now there’s been no way to pass that along.
What the state is doing
The 2020 corridor study identified some $370 million in possible improvements, and current work focuses on the 191/64 intersection, Lava Lake, and the Spanish Creek bridge. The road will get better, slowly, in a place where the building seasons are short and the money is real.
